Procedure
To a suspension of 5,6-dihydro-8-methoxy-2-mercapto-4H-imidazo[4,5,1-ij]quinoline (2.2 g) in ethanol was added 4-picolyl chloride HCl (1.68 g) and the mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 16 hours and at reflux for 2 hours. The solvent was removed by evaporation and the residue dissolved in water. The solution was washed with EtOAc and then basified (aqueous NaOH) and extracted with CHCl3. Following short column chromatography (SiO2 /CHCl3) the residue was crystallised from EtOAc to give the title compound (1.45 g, 43%) mp 99°-101° C. (Found: C,65.55; H,5.6; N,13.8. C17H17N3OS, requires C,65.6; H,5.5; N,13.5%).
