An ice cold solution of 2,2-dimethyl-5-oxo-1-imidazolidineacetamide (1 g) in 20 ml of saturated solution of sodium hydrogen carbonate was added with an additional 2 g of sodium hydrogen carbonate and treated dropwise with chloroacetyl chloride (3 ml). After 30 minutes of stirring the precipitate was collected and crystallized from methanol, to give 3-(2-chloroacetyl)-2,2-dimethyl-5-oxo-1-imidazolidineacetamide (0.53 g) as a white powder m.p. 214°-216° C.
