To a stirred mixture of 4.6 parts of Potassium hydroxide and 200 parts of water were added portionwise 1.7 parts of iodomethane, followed by the dropwise addition of 3.8 parts of 9-[(4-fluorophenyl)methyl]-9H-purine-8-thiol. Upon complete addition, the whole was stirred for 2 hours at room temperature. The precipitated product was filtered off and dried, yielding 3.45 parts (73.9%) of 9-[(4-fluorophenyl)methyl]-8-(methylthio)-9H-purine; mp. 167.1° C. (interm. 25).
