By the method of Example 1, Step I, 11.1 g (0.0533 mole) of methyl 2-(4-formylphenoxy)propionate and 2.02 g (0.0533 mole) of sodium borohydride were reacted in methanol, yielding 9.31 g of methyl 2-(4-hydroxymethylphenoxy)propionate as a yellow oil. The NMR spectrum was consistent with the proposed structure.
