5.0 G. of 5-oxo-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cycloheptene-2-carboxylic acid (as prepared above) is suspended in 50 ml. of dioxane, added to excess ethereal diazomethane, and stirred until dissolution is complete. The solution is then evaporated to dryness to yield methyl (5-oxo-5H-dibenzo[a,d]cyclohepten-2-yl)carboxylate (m.p. 115°-116° C).
