Procedure
A mixture of formic acid (4.7 ml) and acetic anhydride (11.3 ml) is heated at 60° C. for 2 hr. 3,4-Dihydro-1H-[1]benzothieno[2,3-c]pyran-1-methylamine (1.0 g), described in Example 34, is added at room temperature and the mixture is allowed to stand overnight. The mixture is poured on ice and extracted with chloroform. The extract is washed (brine), dried (MgSO4) and evaporated to give 3,4-dihydro-N-formyl-1H-[1]benzothieno[2,3-c]pyran-1-methylamine, nmr (CDCl3) δ 3.16 and 4.95.
