Procedure
To a stirred suspension of 2-acetyl-3-methylquinoxaline-1,4-dioxide (1.57 moles) in 3 liters of methanol was added bromine (1.74 moles) over a period of 2 hours. The reaction mixture was then stirred for 5 days at room temperature. The resulting yellow solid was collected by filtration, washed with methanol and ether. Yield, 331 grams (71%); m.p. 164-6° C.
