19.8 parts of isobutyraldehyde and 62.2 parts of benzhydrylammonium hypophosphite were dissolved in 75 parts of ethanol and the mixture was heated at reflux for 3 hours. After cooling the mixture was filtered to give DL-1-benzhydrylamino-2-methyl-propanephosphonous acid of melting point 189°-192°.
