3-Nitrocinnamic acid (1.5 g, 7.77 mM) was suspended in a mixture of ethanol (80 ml) and water (20 ml), and palladium on charcoal (10%, 100 mg) added. The mixture was shaken in an atmosphere of hydrogen for 4.5 hours, when uptake of gas complete. After filtration through diatomaceous earth, the solvent was removed to give title compound.
