Reaction Steps
A solution of the lactone from Step 1 in THF was treated with 2 equivalents of 1N NaOH and the mixture heated at reflux for 2 hrs. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was lyophilized for 16 hrs to afford the title compound.
