Procedure

5.29 g of 1 was dissolved in 25 ml of 1,2-dimethoxyethane. The solution was treated with 5.4 g of the mixed anhydrides of formic acid and acetic acid, prepared by mixing the appropriate amounts of formic acid and acetic anhydride, and distilling the product. The resulting mixture was held overnight at room temperature. The solvent was evaporated and the residue was extracted with chloroform. The extract was washed with sodium bicarbonate solution, dried and the solvent evaporated. The residue was treated with charcoal in hexane; the mixture was filtered and the filtrate let stand. 2 crystallized out, mp 103°-105° C.
