A solution of 17.0 g of 4-(2-aminoethyl)thiomethyl-5-methylimidazole and 11.2 g of N-cyano-N',S-dimethylisothiourea in 500 ml of acetonitrile was refluxed for 24 hours. The mixture was concentrated and the residue was chromatographed on a column of silica gel with acetonitrile as eluant. The product obtained was recrystallized from acetonitrile-ether to give N-cyano-N'-methyl-N"-[2-(5-methyl-4-imidazolylmethylthio)ethyl]guanidine, m.p. 141°-142°.
