The same procedures as in the Step 3 of Example 1 were repeated except that 3.42 g of ethyl 2-(2,6-dichloroanilino)-phenylglyoxylate were employed instead of 3.24 g of methyl 2-(2,6-dichloroanilino)phenylglyoxylate, thereby yielding 2.9 g of ethyl 2-(2,6-dichloroanilino)phenylglycolate m.p. 154.5°-156.0° C. Yield: 86% of theoretical amount
