Procedure

2-(N-Methyl-amino)-5-methyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole (6 g, 0.046 mole) in pyridine (190 ml) was refluxed for 6 hours with benzoyl chloride (9.7 g, 0.069 mole) and the pyridine then evaporated off under reduced pressure. The residue was treated with water, made alkaine with sodium hydroxide solution and extracted with chloroform. The chloroform was washed with a saturated solution of sodium bicarbonate and and a saturated solution of sodium chloride, dried, filtered and evaporated to yield title product which was recrystallised from ethanol.
