A mixture of 0.975 g of the product of Example 3 in 4 ml of 50% aqueous formic acid was stirred at 55° C. for 10 minutes and 4 ml of water were added thereto. The mixture was vacuum filtered and the filtrate was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The residue was effloresced with 2 ml of ethanol and was vacuum filtered. The product was washed with ethanol and then with ether to obtain 0.428 g of pure 3-acetoxymethyl-7-[2-(2-amino-4-thiazolyl)-2-methoxyiminoacetamido]-ceph-3-eme-4-carboxylic acid with a syn configuration.
