A mixture of 0.70 g of 4-(1-hydroxy-2,2-dimethylpropyl)-2-propyl-1-{4-[2-(tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carbonitrile [prepared as described in step (c) above] in 14 ml of 1N aqueous sodium hydroxide and 7 ml of ethanol was heated under reflux for 2 hours. At the end of this time, the ethanol in the reaction mixture was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure, and ethyl acetate and 14 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid were added to the residue. The ethyl acetate layer was separated, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated by evaporation under reduced pressure, to give 0.45 g of the title compound as a powder, melting at 174°-176° C.
