Procedure

705 mg of methyl 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-2-methoxymethyl-1-{4-[2-(trityltetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]-phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carboxylate [prepared as described in step (a) above] were dissolved in 10 ml of a 25% aqueous solution of acetic acid, and the mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 4 hours. At the end of this time, 10 ml of water were added, whilst ice-cooling, and the trityl alcohol which appeared as crystals was filtered off. The filtrate was concentrated by distillation under reduced pressure, and then acetic acid and water were distilled off as azeotropic mixtures with benzene, to give 460 mg of the title compound as an amorphous powder.
