A solution of 400 mg of ethyl 2-ethoxymethyl-4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-1-{4-[2-(tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carboxylate [prepared as described in Example 86(b)] in 3.5 ml of a 1N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. Insoluble matter was then filtered off, and 3.5 ml of 1N aqueous hydrochloric acid were added to the filtrate. The amorphous powder which precipitated was collected, to give 301 mg of the title compound, melting at 150° C. (with softening).
