A mixture of 217 mg of ethyl 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-2-methylthiomethyl-1-{4-[2-(tetrazol-5-yl)phenyl]phenyl}methylimidazole-5-carboxylate [prepared as described in Example 102(e)] and 3.2 ml of a 0.5N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. At the end of this time, the insoluble matter was filtered off, and the filtrate was mixed with 1.6 ml of a 1N aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid. The amorphous powder which had precipitated was collected by filtration, to give 155 mg of the title compound, melting at 172°-181° C. (with softening).
