Procedure

4.4 g of 4-(1,4-dioxaspiro[4,5]dec-8-yl)amino-3-methoxy-2-methoxymethylpyridine (Example 59) is left to stand in 100 ml of 98% formic acid for 17 hours. The mixture is then concentrated, and the residue is extracted by shaking with 2N NaOH and CH2Cl2. After the organic phase has been concentrated, 3.4 g=89.9% of crystals are obtained.
