Sulfuryl chloride (0.34 g) was added dropwise with stirring to a solution of 2-phenylthiomethyl-6-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy]saccharin (0.96 g) in dichloromethane. Stirring was continued at room temperature for three hours and the solution was stripped of volatiles. Dichloromethane was added and the solution was stripped again. Hexane was added to the residue and the mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The resulting white solid was collected and dried affording 2-chloromethyl-6-[2-(2-methoxyethoxy)-ethoxy]saccharin (0.69 g, 89% yield, mp 113°-115° C.).
