Lithium hydroxide monohydrate (1.87 g) was added to a solution of methyl 3-methoxycarbonyl-2-(methylsulphenyl)-4-trifluoromethylbenzoate (13.71 g) in methanol and water. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and the methanol was removed by evaporation. The residual aqueous solution was acidified to pH 1 and extracted with ether, washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and filtered. The filtrate was evaporated to dryness to give 3-methoxycarbonyl-2-(methylsulphenyl)-4-trifluoromethylbenzoic acid (10.85 g) as an off-white solid, NMR (CDCl3) 2.45(s, 3H), 3.95(s,3H), 5.45-6.1(bs, 1H), 7.2(d, 1H), 7.95(d, 1H).
