Reaction Steps

A solution of 11 g of α-[p-(1-cyclohexenyl)-phenyl]-isobutyric acid methyl ester in 100 ml of ethanol is mixed with 20 ml of 10N sodium hydroxide solution and heated for 2 hours to 60°-70° C. This batch is evaporated in vacuo, the residue dissolved in water, washed with ether and the aqueous phase rendered alkaline with 2N hydrochloric acid. Extraction with ether is effected, the ethereal extractes are washed with water, dried over sodium sulphate and evaporated. The solid residue, after recrystallization from ligroin, yields the α-[p-(1-cyclohexenyl)-phenyl]-isobutyric acid of the formula ##SPC19##
