To a mixture of 3-methoxyphenylboronic acid (0.23 g, 1.5 mmol) and [RhCl(cod)]2 (49 mg, 0.1 mmol) in degassed water (3 ml) was added 3-(1H-indol-6-yl)-acrylic acid methyl ester XXX (200 mg, 1.0 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 90° C. for 6 hours, cooled to room temperature, and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered, concentrated, and purified via flash chromatography (hexane/EtOAc) to provide 3-(1H-indol-6-yl)-3-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-propionic acid methyl ester XXXI (190 mg, 61% yield) as a yellow film.
