A mixture of 3-(1H-indol-6-yl)-acrylic acid methyl ester XXX (1.0 g, 5.0 mmol), 2-methoxyphenyl boronic acid (1.1 g, 7.2 mmol), [RhCl(cod)]2 (110 mg, 0.25 mmol) and TEA (5 mmol) in H2O (14 ml) and 1,4-dioxane (1 ml) was stirred at 90° C. in a sealed vial for 6 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4, filtered, concentrated, and purified via flash chromatography (hexane/acetone) to provide 3-(1H-indol-6-yl)-3-(2-methoxy-phenyl)-propionic acid methyl ester XXXVII (300 mg, 20% yield) as a yellow film.
