3.20 g. of 3-acetoxy-3 -(2',4'-difluoro-4-biphenylyl)butan-1-ol and 2 g. of KOH in 50 ml. of methanol are heated under reflux for 2 hours. Water and chloroform are added and the reaction mixture is worked up to give 3-(2',4'-difluoro-4-biphenylyl)butane-1,3-diol, m.p. 82°-84°.
