A mixture of 3 g. of 3-(2',4'-difluoro-4-biphenylyl)butane-1,3-diol, 5 ml. of acetic anhydride and 8 ml. of pyridine is allowed to stand for 15 hours at 20°, poured into ice water and worked up with chloroform and water to give 1-acetoxy-3-(2',4'-difluoro-4-biphenylyl)butan-3-ol.
