A mixture of 6.20 parts of 2-benzyl-8-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline hydrochloride and 0.62 parts of 5% palladium-on-carbon catalyst in 100 parts by volume of ethanol is hydrogenated at 2 psi and ambient temperature for about 6 hours. The filtered reaction solution is concentrated to 75 parts by volume and after the addition of ether crystalline solid is formed. This solid is recrystallized from ethanol to yield 8-phenyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline hydrochloride, as white crystals melting at about 268°-270° C.
