Bis(methylthio)methylenemalononitrile [prepared according to the procedure described in Chem. Ber., 95, 2861 (1962)] (9.94 g, 58.4 mmole) was added with stirring to a solution of 2-[(4-methyl-1H-imidazol-5-yl)methylthio]ethylamine (10.0 g, 58.4 mmole) in 100 ml of absolute ethanol. After stirring at room temperature for 90 minutes, the solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure, and the residue placed on silica gel and chromatographed to yield the title compound (15.65 g).
