Procedure
4-Amino-1-(2-methylpropyl)-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline-2-methanol (5.0 g; 0.0185 mol, Example 9) was added in small portions to vigorously stirred thionyl chloride (25 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. The mixture was diluted with 100 mL of ether, and the solid was filtered from the mixture and dried thoroughly. The product was pure enough for further reactions. A sample was recrystallized from ethanol to give a pure product which melted with decomposition from 279°-292° C.
