29.36 g (33.7 mmol) of manganese dioxide are added in three batches, at 15 minute intervals, to a solution of 9.4 g (33.7 mmol) of the alcohol obtained in Step E in 160 ml of anhydrous methylene chloride. After one hour's stirring, the reaction mixture is filtered over Celite and the methylene chloride is removed by evaporation under reduced pressure. The crude product is crystallised from diisopropyl ether, yielding, finally, 8.27 g of a yellow solid.
