Procedure
A solution of sodium borohydride (5 g) in methanol was added to a solution of 2,3-difluoromethylenedioxybenzaldehyde (36 g) in methanol with cooling so that the temperature did not exceed 10 ° C. The reaction mixture was then allowed to warm to ambient temperature and stirred for 1 hour. Most of the methanol was evaporated and the residue was poured into cold 20% sodium hydroxide solution, extracted with ether, separated and washed with brine (until neutral), dried and the solvent removed to yield the title compound as a colourless oil (33.7 g), NMR (CDCl3): 2.10(br, 1H), 4.80(d,2H), 7.00(m, 1H), 7.10(m,2H).
