Reaction Steps
To 3.4 g (.10 mmol) N-(4'-chloro-2'-fluoro-5'-formylphenyl)-3-(trifluoromethyl)glutarimide (Compound 94) in 110 ml toluene was added 0.94 g (15 mmol) ethylene glycol and a catalytic amount of p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate (0.48 g, 2 mmol). The mixture was refluxed for 72 h with removal of water via a Dean-Stark trap. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was partitioned between EtOAc and water. The organics were washed with water and brine, dried over MgSO4, then filtered and concentrated to leave 4.1 g (105 % yield) of an oily taffy containing mostly product by NMR analysis. Recrystallization from Et2O afforded 1.0 g of the 1,3-dioxane as a pale yellow solid, m.p. 158°-161° C.
