Procedure
To a solution of 17-tetrabenzo(a,c,g,i)fluorenylmethyl-p-nitrophenyl carbonate (39.2 mg, 0.07 mmol) and glycine tert-butyl ester acetate salt (14.7 mg, 0.077 mmol; 1.1 equiv.) in dichloromethane (1.5 ml) was added N,N′-dimethyl aniline (18 μl, 0.14 mmol; 2 equiv). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature, under nitrogen, for 72 h. After addition of water (10 ml) and acidification with KHSO4 (2M; pH=1), the reaction mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (3×15 ml), washed with water (3×20 ml) and dried over MgSO4. The solvent was removed in vacuo to give an orange oil which was triturated in ether. A yellow solid was obtained which was filtered, washed with petrol (b.p. 40-60° C.) and dried to give compound (42) (30.6 mg, 79%); m.p. 170-171° C.; (Found: C, 79.7; H, 5.51; N, 2.33; C37H31NO4 requires: C, 80.3; H, 5.60; N, 2.53%); t.l.c.
