Reaction Steps
2.35 g of the product of Step (e), above, is heated in a mixture 12 ml of THF and 6 ml of 2N hydrochloric acid, at 60° for 5 hours. The reaction mixture is then diluted with methyl tert.-butyl ether and washed with 2N hydrochloric acid and then brine. The aqueous phases are combined and extracted thrice with methyl tert.-butyl ether. The combined organic extracts are washed with aqueons sodium carbonate, dried and concentrated to give 1.58 g of the title aldehyde product of this step, NMR(CDCl3) δ0.95 (3H, s), 7.2-7.7(13H, m), 7.85-8.05(1H, m), 10(1H, s).
