Titanium tetrachloride (15.2 g) in dry toluene (105 ml) is added slowly to a stirred solution of 5-methoxy-1-tetralone (49 g), and morpholine (160 g) in dry toluene (1 l) cooled in an ice bath to a temperature of 3° C. under a nitrogen atmosphere. The reaction mixture is allowed to warm to RT and stirred at RT under N2 overnight. The reaction mixture is filtered, the filtered solid washed with dry toluene and dry THF and the combined filtrates evaporated in vacuo to a yellow solid (63.5 g), M.P. 80°-90° C.
