To a stirred solution of 4-nitrobiphenyl (50.00 g, 0.25 mol) in chloroform (750 mL) was added dropwise at room temperature chlorosulfonic acid (17 mL, 0.3 mol). The reaction mixture was stirred at 60° C. for 6 h. The white precipitate formed was collected by filtration and washed with cold chloroform. The product was air dried to give 31.00 g of 4-nitrobiphenylsulfonic acid (Yield 61%).
