5,6-Diamino-1-(2-methoxy-ethyl)-2-thioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-pyrimidin-4-one (0.27 g, 1.3 mmol) was suspended in formic acid (2 mL) and this solution was heated at 90° C. for 1.5 h. Excess formic acid was evaporated off under reduced pressure. 10% Sodium hydroxide solution (5 mL) was added to the orange solid and the resulting solution was heated at 90° C. for 2 h. The reaction mixture was neutralized with dilute acetic acid. The resulting solution was put in the fridge for several days, then the orange needle-like crystals that had formed were collected by filtration and washed with water. Yield: (0.11 g, 40%).
