Procedure

Acrylonitrile (1.03 mL, 15.7 mmol, 2.50 equiv) was added at 0° C. to a solution of 4-(4-methoxyphenyl)-4-phenylpiperidine (1.68 g, 6.28 mmol, 1.00 equiv) in EtOH (20 mL) and the resulting solution was stirred for 1.5 hours at room temperature. After removal of the solvent, the residue was purified by flash chromatography (SiO2, EtOAc-CHCl3 1:3) to give 1.41 g (70%) of colorless oil, which was characterized spectroscopically.
