Reaction Steps
89.25 of (+/−)-trans-2-ethoxy-1-methoxy-4-(2-nitrocyclohex-4-enyl)benzene (compound D1) and 37 g of potassium hydroxide are dissolved in 500 ml of absolute ethanol. A solution of 23.5 ml of conc. sulfuric acid in 120 ml of absolute ethanol is then added dropwise such that the internal temperature does not exceed −2° C. After stirring for 1 h, the mixture is added to 4 l of ice water, and the precipitate is filtered off with suction, washed with water and dried, M.p.: 66-67° C.
