Procedure
Sodium borohydride (0.3 g) was added portionwaise to a suspension of the product from step (ii) (1 g) in a mixture of methanol (40 ml) and dichloromethane (30 ml) at room temperature. After 1 hour the reaction mixture was partitioned between dichloromethane and brine. The organic phase was collected, dried (MgSO4) and evaporated under reduced pressure to leave a beige foam. Yield: 1 g. Used directly in the next step.
