Ethyl 2-[4-(3-nitroquinolin-4-yloxy)phenoxy]propionate (41) was prepared from 4-chloro-3-nitroquinoline and ethyl 2-(4-hydroxyphenoxy)propionate following essentially the same procedure as that described in Example 1. The compound was isolated as a yellow oil. Proton magnetic resonance spectrum (CDCl3 ; δ in ppm): 9.3 (1H, s); 8.3-7.4 (4H, m, quinoline protons); 6.8 (4H, s, phenoxy protons); 4.7 (1H, q, CH--CH3); 4.2 (2H, q, OCH2 --CH3); 1.6 (3H, d, CH--CH3); 1.2 (3H, t, OCH2 --CH3).
