Reaction Steps
To a stirred solution of 1-keto-5-indanesulfonamide (6.3 g, 30 mmol), in 120 ml of 50% aqueous methanol at 0° C. was added NaBH4 (1.1 g, 30 mmol) in several portions. The cooling bath was removed and the mixture allowed to stir at room temperature for 30 minutes. After removal of the methanol in vacuo, the residue was extracted with ethyl acetate (4×75 ml) and the combined organic phase dried (Na2SO4). Filtration, followed by evaporation of the solvent, gave 5.4 g (84%) of product as a white solid.
