Procedure

A mixture of methyl 3-(dipropylamino)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolinecarboxylate (1.0 g), methanol (15 mL) and 4.0N sodium hydroxide solution (3.3 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 30 minutes. The methanol was removed and the residue was reconstituted in water (5 mL) and neutralized by addition of 4.0N hydrochloric acid (3.3 mL). The precipitate was filtered off, washed with water and air dried to give 0.67 g of 3-(dipropylamino)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-2-oxo-8-quinolinecarboxylic acid, mp 214°-217° C. Anal Calcd for C16H22N2O3 : C, 66.18; H, 7.64; N, 9.65. Found: C, 65.99; H, 7.67; N, 9.62.
