Procedure
Sodium borohydride (6.4 g) was added in one portion to an ice cold solution composed of 25.4 g of 2-carboethoxy-4-cycloheptylthiazole and 200 ml of ethyl alcohol. The ice bath was removed after 30 min and the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature. After 16 hr the reaction mixture was diluted with 400 ml of ice water and extracted with methylene chloride. The combined extracts were washed with brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated in vacuo to yield 18.6 g of 4-cycloheptyl-2-thiazolemethanol as an oil.
