A solution of 3.2 g. of 3-hydroxymethylene-6,7-dimethoxy-2-methyl-4-oxo-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-1-quinoline carboxylic acid, ethyl ester in 30 ml. of benzene containing 650 mg. of isopropylamine is allowed to stir at room temperature for 48 hrs. The reaction solution is concentrated to give 4 g. of a yellow foam which could not be induced to crystallize.
