Reaction Steps

A mixture of 9.2 g of diphenyl(2-methylphenyl)phosphine in 65 ml of methanol was heated to solution on a steam bath, then cooled to room temperature. Over 5 minutes, a solution of 3.76 g of hydroxylamine-O-sulfonic acid in 24 ml of methanol was added. This mixture was filtered into 400 ml of ether and the solid collected giving 8.40 g of P-(2-methylphenyl)-P,P-diphenylphosphine inide, sulfate salt.
