Methyl-5-(4-dimethylaminomethyl-2-pyridyl)pentanoimidate is added to a methanol solution of cyanamide. After standing overnight N-cyano-5-(4-dimethylaminomethyl-2-pyridyl)pentanoamidine is obtained.
