Into 15 mI of concentrated sulfuric acid, under ice-cooled condition with stirring, 3.0 g of 2,4-dimethyl-6-(2-phenylacryloyl)phenol was added gradually, then the whole mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was poured in 100 g of ice and extracted with 200 ml of methylene chloride. The extract was washed with water and dried with anhydrous magnesium sulfate, then was concentrated under a reduced pressure to obtain the residue. The residue was recrystallized from ethanol to obtain 2.11 g of 2,3-dihydro-4,6-dimethyl-2-phenyl-7-hydroxy-1H-inden-1-one.
