To a mixture of 2-hydroxy-1H-isoindole-1,3(2H)-dione (2.70 g, 16.6 mmol), tert-butyl 4-(hydroxymethyl)-1H-imidazole-1-carboxylate 120 (Bull. Chem. Soc., Japan, 2002, Vol 75, No 11, 2517-2526, 1.64 g, 8.27 mmol) and triphenylphosphine (4.34 g, 16.6 mmol) in THF (100 mL) was added DIAD (3.52 mL, 18.2 mmol) slowly at room temperature. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and concentrated to provide a residue which was subjected to chromatography to give 121 (1.7 g, 61.96) as a white foam.
